Addiction by Ayako Eye Lacquers WP En Plein Air, Swimming Pool, Rumble Fish, Black Swan

Finally I took the plunge and made my first choices from Kosé's Addiction by Ayako offerings. After seeing so many wonderful reviews and swatches on my favourite blogs and swooning over all the beautiful products and promo pictures, I knew it was only a question of time until I tried this brand. Well, I'm glad I finally tried it, all I can say is why did it take me so long? :-)

The Eye Lacquers WP were released in the Lady of the Lake collection, a nicely edited waterproof collection which included new shades of the eyeliner pencils and these liquid eyeshadows. I purchased four of the nine available colours, three of them because I thought they were unique and one for everyday use. They are packaged in a black lacquered square tube with doe foot applicator.

I really like how they apply, they are very liquid and feel slightly cool but dry well. Not instantaneously, still take a few seconds to dry which may make it tricky to layer but once dried they won't budge. I'd definitely recommend you allow it to fully dry before layering otherwise the finish will be patchy and will start to fall off during the day (I wasn't a happy bunny on the day I tried that look hahaha). But as I said they have an amazing lasting power when set and applied in thin layers. The advantage of taking some time to dry is that you can blend with a brush, this will bring out the sparkles very nicely.

RMK Deep Iridescence eye shadows: Iridescent Deep Red, Iridescent Navy, Iridescent Deep Gray

For me visiting the new Selfridges Beauty Workshop is a bit like a kind in a candy store. So much to look at! So many brands all together! Bright, clean counters with friendly people! I have to say Selfridges reputation increased a lot in my eyes (granted, only been there once) but I used to hate going to their Beauty Hall. The new RMK counter is quite central in this new location and much nicer and bigger than the previous. Settled next to Stila and Ellis Faas it's easy to get distracted with other purposes than my initial one. Which was to go and see the RMK Autumn collection: Deep Iridescence

I've been in love with the promotional look since the first time I saw it; smoky shimmery eyes are always so pretty! Here I'll show you the eye shadow duos. I adore everything I bought!

The Deep Iridescent Eyes are a combination of a blackened base and a shimmer bright complementary colour in the centre of the pan. You can use the blackened base to smoke the eye, and go as subtle or heavy as you want and then you can use the shimmery bright colour all over it or just highlight the lid, inner corner and brow bone which will bring out the colourful shades of the smoky eyes. The base is smooth and the highlight is a bit grittier with some fallout, but nothing that can't be easily tidied up.

I have these in three combinations (swatches after the descriptions): red, navy and grey. There's also brown, purple and green combinations available which albeit pretty are less impressive.

Foundation matches for fair skin

I'm fair skinned, usually the second or third lightest shade and have neutral towards pinkish undertones. My cheeks are a bit red from broken veins but other than that there's not much I need to disguise with foundation, it's mostly about trying to even out my skin tone.

I'm a huge fan of cream and liquid foundations. I tried to stay away from compact and powder foundations but recently I've been pleasantly surprised by a couple of them. My problem is I can't resist a good foundation (or a good foundation pitch) so I accumulate more than I would ever need.

For reference my MAC shades are: N2 in the face and body foundation and NW20 in the other foundations.

Liquid foundations:
  • By Terry sheer expert (#7 vanilla beige)
  • Ellis Faas skin veil (S102) - this is the most perfect match ever! I can literally use it only in places and you wouldn't be able to tell
  • Hourglass veil fluid make-up (1.5 nude)
  • Illamasqua skin base (No. 06)
  • myface mymix foundation (fair 2)
  • NARS sheer matte (Light 4 Deauville) - click here for the full review
  • Rouge Bunny Rouge liquid (coconut milk parfait)
  • Rouge Bunny Rouge liquid (almond milk parfait)

Estée Lauder Cyber Teal gelée powder eye shadow and Electric Teal intense kajal eyeliner

The minute I saw the promotional look for these eyeshadows I knew I had to get the Cyber Teal colour. I love bright aquas, teals, turquoises and all the colours in this family. The gelée powder promised to be shiny, bright and with great colour pay-off (I was very impressed last Summer with the gelée powder highlighter, but it was too shimmery for my taste). As soon as I realised they were released I hunted every site and counter until I finally found one and bought it with the matching eyeliner Electric Teal. I am happy I can say this is everything I expected it to be.
Estée Lauder gelée powder in cyber teal & intense kajal eyeliner in electric teal
This eyeshadow applies very smooth and intensifies magnificently when wet. It's long lasting and easy to blend. It applies in the eye exactly as it looks in the pan. There's not enough good things I can say about it. I managed to persuade myself that the other colours in the collection were just too similar to other stuff I have, but trust me it was very hard to resist buying them all. The intense kajal eyeliner was a great surprise, I never used an E.L. eyeliner but this feels smooth on the skin but has great intensity and lasting power. It smudges easily and feels comfortable in the waterline.
Estée Lauder cyber teal swatched wet, dry and electric teal eyeliner (l. to r.)
Both the shades are very much a teal; the most perfect mixture between blue and green. With such intense colours it's not something you can just apply lightly to the eye, you have to go really bold or it will feel a bit misplaced; this is not a pastel colour for a light wash. I adapted Tom Pecheux's cyber eyes look by using the cyber teal eyeshadow wet all over the eyelid and in the lower lashline; then with NARS night clubbing blended into the crease and NARS night star highlighting the brow bone (he uses copper and pink). I smudged the upper lashline with MAC smoulder and the lower with electric teal, also applying it in the waterline.

I used 3 coasts of L'Oréal false lash telescopic mascara in black. I'll confess I only bought this mascara because I was impressed that for once the advert was not shot with false eyelashes... Hey, honest advertisement works! I am very, very impressed with the quality and this is now my go-to mascara for daily oomph. After all the mess was cleaned-up I evened the skin with Estée Lauder daywear B.B. cream (light) and highlighted the cheeks with NARS enchanted cream blush. I used a neutral shade on my lips (Paul & Joe lip gloss06 sheer bliss).

May not be sophisticated but few things (makeup-wise) make me feel as excited as colourful strong eyeshadow.

How about you? Are you also a fan of bright smoky eyes?

    Victoria Beckham's signature look [Tutorial]

    $

I have to say that I like Victoria Beckham a lot, even if her public persona is not very loved. I think she is a smart woman, a good mother of 4, a great entrepreneur and while subject to the most outrageous attacks from the media she manages to keep her family together, being married for more than 10 years to one of the most wanted men in the world.
Victoria usually uses the same makeup look, whether she is in a red carpet event or daily schedule. She has oily skin, so she does not wear a lot of makeup and her skin is usually a bit shiny. Her signature look is smudged liner with slightly smoked eye shadow, a lot of mascara and nude lips, with an all-over bronzed skin.

Started by applying a sheer foundation, Myface mymix foundationFair 2. I did not wear loose powder to get that glowing skin she tends to have. I used MAC select cover up concealerNW20 to cover under eye circles and blemishes around the nose.

Usually we don't see Victoria with very evident blush so I chose one with sheer pigment. I swiped Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzing powderAruba on the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin to achieve a soft sun-kissed skin, highlighted the cheekbones with Aube illuminating powder (love this product) and for blush I used Giorgio Armani sheer blush#3.

I primed my eyelids with Urban Decay primer potion and then used MAC matte eyeshadow Blanc Type all over the eyelids to create a base. I lined the eyes with an eye pencil - L’oréal Contour Khôl  #164 Chrome brown. The liner is applied all over the eyes and inside the waterline. This is the key point for her signature look. Smudge the eyeliner with a smudging brush, keeping the colour as close to the eyelashes as possible. I then used Urban Decay Naked palette. I smudged Darkhorse on the crease and lower lash-line, blending very well the eyeshadow. I used Toasted in the centre of the crease, to create a lighter area. Then I repeated this process again, accentuating the smoked effect. I left the brow bone only with blanc type, since Victoria never uses shimmer here. I curled my lashes with SUQQU eyelash curler and applied several coats of Revlon Grow Luscious mascara.

I applied RMK Irresistible lips #20 Neutral Beige to the lips and topped with a coat of MAC Viva Glam Lip Glass Gaga 2.

Spring with NARS Illuminators: Laguna, Copacabana and Super Orgasm

Cream and liquid makeup gives you lots of fun and liberty to work with. It is almost impossible to get an over-made effect since these kind of products tend to be light and flattering. Also, after you get used to this texture it becomes really easy and fun.

This is a very light Spring look, perfect for Mediterranean weather. Fun to wear during the day and easy to transform into a more sultry evening look (I will do a day-to-night next time). Here I used 3 of NARS liquid illuminator shades: Copacabana (highlighter), Laguna (bronzer) and Super Orgasm (blusher).

Start by applying foundation with a brush. I used Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation in 52, it's very sheer but provides sufficient coverage. Then correct and conceal where needed areas – in my case it was under the eyes, nose and blemishes.

Correct and gently define your eyebrows with your eyebrow brush/comb smudged in the Make Up For Ever Waterproof eyebrow corrector in 3. I have not overly defined the eyebrows since I wanted to go for a more girly look.

Start by building the contour applying the bronzer in the areas you can see in the picture: under your cheek bones, jaw line, temples and sides of your nose. Gently blend the product into the skin until all the natural shadow of these areas are emphasized. Blend with a blush or with your fingers. Laguna is a very gentle bronzer and this liquid formula is amazing to work with.

Apply the highlighter on the cheek bones, bridge of the nose and brow bones, using the same technique as with the bronzer. Then apply the blush exactly in the space left between the highlighter and the bronzer, creating a three-dimensional effect that emphasizes your cheeks and makes them look more high and girly.

To keep on the NARS liquid/cream theme I used the cream eyeshadow duo in Pink Panther, applying the icy pink all over the eyelid and defining the entire crease with the darker rose gold shade. Gently apply the black cream eye shadow (Zardoz) near the entire lash line and then start to bring it up towards the outer corner of the crease, without applying more product. With a clean blending brush and no product, blend the three colours to create a light smoked effect.

Apply several coats of mascara (2 or maybe 10!! lol) after curling your eyelashes (I used Shu Uemura's). For the lips I didn’t want a glamorous defined lip, so I applied Dolce & Gabbana Baby Darling lipstick strait from the bullet and softened the colour with my finger.  And here's the final look!

Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation and Brush review [and Perfect Rouge RD514 Dragon applied]

When passing through Heathrow's Terminal 5 back in November I bought the new Shiseido Perfect Foundation Brush and Perfect Refining Foundation and was happily surprised when received as a gift a mini Perfect Rouge RD514 Dragon.

Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation, Perfect Rouge RD514 Dragon and Brush
I've been using the brush and the foundation regularly for the past few months and I am as much in awe of these products as when I first tried them.

I'm sure you will have heard that the Perfect Foundation Brush is small. Well, it really is small, just look at the picture above. The handle is roughly the same size as the handle for the Shu Uemura face brush #18. I personally like this size for face brushes because I enjoy having control over the application. The bristles are synthetic, cut in an angled shape. and very densely packed. Use the brush to buff the foundation into the skin and blend, blend, blend away. It really does give a wonderful finish, but you have to be patient and buff the foundation section by section (that's the downside of more control in application).

I find this brush works the best with liquid foundations, it will absorb quite a bit so it needs regular washing (at least once a week) but it's the best brush I found for applying liquid bases. It also works well with powder and stick foundations. In the picture below (right side) I've blended the perfect refining foundation with the brush. It gives a lovely finish, making the foundation super even, smooth and blended. It's my go-to brush for a polished finish.

Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation in 120 Natural Light Ivory
The Perfect Refining Foundation looks quite inconspicuous in the tiny rectangular plastic container (although it holds the usual 30 ml). This is a light, liquid foundation. But it's quite impressive the coverage this foundation has. It covers all redness, pores and roughness in my skin. It gives a very polished look, especially when used in conjunction with the perfect foundation brush. It lasts all day and doesn't oxidise on me (yeah!). Shade #120 natural light ivory is a really good match for my colouring (MAC NW20).

There's only two things that make me sit on the fence regarding re-purchasing this foundation: it dries quite quickly so applying it has to be a swift job (meaning I have to be awake to use it) and it looks almost too perfect. I need to try it with a damp sponge to see if I can achieve a more natural look.

Below I'm wearing the Perfect Refining Foundation applied with the Perfect Foundation Brush and only a bit of bronzer on the face. The lipstick I'm wearing is the Perfect Rouge RD514 Dragon - fabulous red shade, long lasting and comfortable although not the most moisturising lippie. I prefer to wear it over lip balm and lip liner for lasting power without flaking lips.

NARS pink blushers: Gaiety vs. Mata Hari vs. Desire vs. Angelika [review, swatches]

NARS has quite a nice offer of bright pink powder blushers.  Gaiety arrived this Spring to keep company to the already extensive collection of Angelika, Desire and Mata Hari. I love all of them! People (MUAs) keep telling me I have a warm skin tone and with all the redness in my cheeks I should stay away from pinks, especially cool ones. But I'm stubborn and I keep on buying and using them, and to be honest I do like the look of them in my face. So feel free to slag me off for crimes against makeup application. Back to the NARS blushers, here they are in alphabetical order so no-one feels shunned.

NARS cool pink powder blush: Angelika, Desire, Gaiety, Mata Hari

Angelika is a bright cotton candy pink with gold shimmer, it's very similar to Desire apart from the shimmer. Desire is matte. They are both fun to use and perfect for doll-like cheeks. Mata Hari leans towards mauve and is a touch darker than Desire. It's completely matte and I find it one of the most powdery of NARS blushers. It requires more blending and a light hand. Gaiety is the completely different from all other 3. It's a  very sheer, clear pink with a lavender undertone. It's so pretty - it was love at first sight and I ignored all advise from the makeup artist. I'm glad I did because this is a gorgeous blush for a fresh Spring look.

    NARS pink blush comparison swatches

Since I bought it I've been using Gaiety at least once a week, it's my favourite Spring blush.

How about you, do you have a favourite Spring blush?

NARS x Thakoon nails - the rainbow manicure [swatches on short nails]

The NARS and Thakoon nail polish collaboration is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Inspired by the hues of an Indian spice market all the shades are bright and vibrant, simply stunning. They will look good on most skintones. In terms of quality they apply quite smooth, one of the best NARS formulations I have experienced except Kukti which streaked a bit. Still, after 3 coats it matched the other polishes.
NARS x Thakoon (left to right): Kukti, Koliary, Lal Mirchi, Anardana, Ratin Jot

I skipped the bright yellow (Amchoor) since this shade does not suit me, it will look fabulous on a dark skintone. The other ones: Kukti is a light powder blue; Koliary is a cyan blue (looks a bit subdued in the picture, it's more intense in real life); Lal Mirchi is red orange; Anardana is hot reddish pink and Ratin Jot is light purple.

Initially I swatched all the colours in one hand to make it easier to take a picture, but the colour combination looked so cool I decided to sport a rainbow manicure for a couple of days. These shades will be amazing to combine on french manicures, I'm just not skilled enough to do it. Apologies for the state of my nails, after a couple of bad weeks of biting my nails they are very short and don't look their best.

Pan Am makeup with 3 Custom Color - warm lilac eyeshadow, aurora liner and poppy cheek stain

3 Custom Color released a mini collection with the makeup used by Patricia Regan in the PAN AM series. They created those shades based on her specifications and funny enough, being a tv show, the collection has few items. I have the warm lilac eyeshadow, the aurora opaline creme eyeliner and the poppy lip and cheek stain. There were two more eyeshadows included in the collection and another eyeliner. I've never tried any 3 Custom Color makeup before and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality.

    (l. to r.) poppy lip & cheek stain, warm lilac eyeshadow, aurora opaline eyeliner

The eyeshadow can be used wet or dry, in the swatches you can see how much more intense it is when used wet. Warm lilac is exactly what it says on the tin; the powder is very smooth (not exactly SUQQU level of finely milled but it is better than similar price points) and it lasts all day when used with a primer.

Poppy lip and cheek stain was created to match exactly the description of the PAN AM manuals and it is a pretty coral stain. I understand it's a stain, but it is too creamy to last on the lips and requires some layers to show up the same as in the pan. When applied to the cheeks without layering (or if you blend much) it shows more pink than coral. I'm torn on this one, love the colour but can't get it to look like that on my skin.

The Opaline liner is the star product in my opinion. It's a deep black base with subtle blue shimmer, much more subtle than the Tom Ford noir absolute. But it comes through shiny and so pretty. Great lasting power and creamy enough to apply in one swipe. Loved this! But I guess I am partial to eyeliner.

The PAN AM look is very clean and office safe with a hint of colour. Patricia suggests applying the eyeshadow all over the lid, lining the upper lid and applying the blush liberally to the apple of the cheeks. She also suggested a matte foundation, but I only had the Make Up For Ever face and body foundation at hand (and I should have used a nude eyeliner on the rims to hide the redness).

Thanks to Marina from Makeup4all for releasing the information about this collection, otherwise it would not have registered on my radar. In the UK Cult Beauty stock an edited selection of 3 Custom Colors.

Can't really end this post without a snarky comment! To those who never heard of this series, PAN AM arrived on the wing of Mad Men to revive the nostalgy for the 60's (see what I did there? that was a failed pun). It follows the women who worked as cabin attendants on PAN AM, when the airline was at the top of their game and cabin attendants were meant to be eye candy first and crew members second. As you can probably guess I don't like the series, mainly because it perpetuates the notion of those times of prejudice, descrimination and civil rights struggles as the "good old days, when men were men and women knew their place". Having said that, the makeup is very gorgeous, attention to detail is amazing as with most American period series and it's not like women in the 60's had many more employment choices. But I still don't like the glorification of those times even when done in style.

Now that Summer has come and gone in London this post looks a bit out of date, so I'm keeping it short... These are the swatches/ look of the By Terry Ombre Blackstar in 07 Fizzy Jade and 08 Paradise Island. They are gorgeous, summer colours and outstanding quality as expected from By Terry.

The Ombre Blackstar are cream eyeshadows packaged in a stick. In my humble opinion, and using my lids as a testing bed they are simply the best cream eyeshadows I ever tried. Usually, anything remotely creamy creases on me. There are some really good ones that last well with a primer (Rouge Bunny Rouge, Paul & Joe, Becca Tints, Laura Mercier, Shiseido); some that crease regardless (MAC Paint Pots, NARS); and then there's the Blackstar babies that I can wear without a primer! They have lovely smooth shimmer that doesn't make my eyelids look creepy and old. They feel comfortable, almost moisturizing. Every since I tried them I've fallen in love and started collecting them. These two are the most recent shades in my collection.

Not so sure about the names though, they sound a bit mawkish. Fizzy Jade is the pale lagoon green and Paradise Island is the bright aqua blue . They are beautiful alone and combined. I can't stop gushing over them.

(left to right) By Terry Ombre Blackstar #7 and #8; mascara Terrybly # 3 Terryblue (ah, the names, the names...)
Ombre Blackstar #7 inner corner blended with #8 outer corner and lower lashline. Mascara Terrybly #3 on the lashes.

If you want to do the Ombre Blackstar on the cheaper side, but without compromising the quality check out The Driveller Kate's review on the Topshop Mystical Crayon. Sadly they don't have a similar shade to these.

A summer wedding look with NARS Abbey Road and MAC Gentle Coral

    By Ines Martins Ferreira

Weddings are one of the perfect occasions to try out edgy looks in makeup! If you are going to a weeding and you're not the bride you should take the risk and have fun with your makeup (that said it doesn’t mean that if you are the bride you should not have fun with it too!!!).

In early June I had the chance to makeup my dear sister for a wedding she attended and, after several days of planning and discussing, we decided to go for a modern take on 50s eyeliner, with perfect skin and sultry lips. This is the final look, keep reading for the details :-)

I started by preparing her skin with the amazing SKII facial treatment essence (the most outrageously stunning product I ever tried) followed with Clarins beauty flash balm. This gave me the perfect base to work with, providing amazing hydration without stimulating oil production in the skin.

I left them work in the skin for a couple of minutes while I was doing her hair and then I applied Shu Uemura brightening uv under base mousse with my fingers, very gently. It is really important to apply a base if you are going to a long event such as a weeding, since you don’t want to look cakey nor spending the entire time in the ladies room re-touching your makeup…. The foundation we picked was the Shu Uemura smooth fit fluid foundation, and it worked amazingly beautiful on her skin, leaving it looking really like baby skin. It has a slight matte finish but without looking too much made up. I have applied it with a foundation brush by MUFE (the HD collection one).

My sister actually does not need concealer (she doesn’t have kids hahahaha) so I used a product by Boticário (a Brazilian brand) very similar to YSL’s touche éclat only to lighten up under the eyes, on the sides of the nose and around the lips. I used Benefit high beam to lighten her cheek bones and setted with MUFE translucent loose powder. It is crucial to set makeup with translucent powder if you want it to be long wear (forget dewy if you want a long wear makeup). For the eyebrows I used Anastasia Beverly Hills powder brow duo in medium ash and groomed with MAC eyebrow gel.

Before I made her eyes I applied blush since I wanted to focus on achieving a doll skin and by applying your blush first you kind of have a gauge and you won’t go too far on the eyes. I mixed up NARS deep throat with DIOR rosy glow awakening blush to achieve a girly shade that matched her skin tone. I worked the blush with Shu Uemura blush travel brush in circular moves, focusing on the centre of the cheeks, not going too far in the direction of the temples.

On the eyes, I applied a nude shade from Urban Decay naked 2 palette all over the eyelid and defined the socket with the baked shade from the naked 1 palette (a nice excuse to be able to use both palettes hehe). The main focus of our makeup was done next, by applying a really defined cat eyeliner with NARS Abbey Road long-wear pencil. Started really thin in the inner corner of the eye and let it become more thick and obvious from the middle to the outer corner of the eye, finishing with a graphic flick in the direction of the eyebrow tail. Lots of mascara (Maybelline Great Lash)!

For the lips I decided to use MAC gentle coral tinted lip conditioner, since it was really easy for her to retouch throughout the day with her finger. By the way, don’t you girls think that retouching you lipstick/lipbalm in public is really feminine and sexy? I just loooove to see that. Another view on the eyeliner, it was really gorgeous:

Makeup was done and she was ready to go and have a fun day! (except the heels part) [Note from the sis: I should have known better not to use heels in traditional cobblestone pavements.... lucky me they were not damaged beyond the effort of re-heel. Other than that, it was a really fun day!]

Dolce & Gabbana Intense Khol Pencils Chocolate, Peacock, Dahlia - review, swatches, applied

Some months ago Dolce & Gabbana released a second version of pencil eyeliners, the Intense Kohl Pencils. While the Crayon Intense Eyeliners are quite lovely, they can be a bit hit and miss in terms of consistency and colour pay-off so I tend to stay away. The Intense Khol Pencils are my kind of eye liners and I couldn't resist getting three of them. I cannot resist a good khol pencil, it's (almost) like a compulsion to me.

Dolce & Gabbana Intense Khol Pencils: Dahlia, Peacock, Chocolate
They've been constantly featuring in my makeups at least on a weekly basis. They are soft to apply, sumdgeable, smoky, long lasting, sexy, come in wonderful colours and absolutely likeable in every sense. I even like the black packaging more than the usual D&G gold one. They arrived in five shades and I skipped the True Black (too many already) and the True White (prefer flesh toned for highlighting) - and purchased the Peacock, Dahlia and Chocolate.

Dolce & Gabbana Intense Khol Pencil (swatches)
Peacock is a turquoise, more blue than green, stunning in every way. I just don't use it that often because it really takes over the look, so I save it for more special makes. Chocolate is a warm brown laced with subtle gold shimmer. Dahlia is shimmery smoky lilac. I thought Dahlia would become my favourite (green eyes, contrasting colours, etc.), but it's Chocolate that's really doing it for me! Dahlia doesn't apply that well on the inner rims and has the least lasting power of all three.

Dolce & Gabbana Intense Khol Pencil Chocolate

Dolce & Gabbana Intense Khol Pencil Dahlia

Dolce & Gabbana Intense Khol Pencil Peacock
(I tried to use the same lighting in all the photos but it didn't work out that well - and apologies for the gap on the outer corner in the peacock application.. oops)

I hope they keep releasing new colours since the formula is so nice. Maybe next time I run out of black pencils I'll go for True Black (at the moment MAC Feline is still my favourite black liner).

My skincare quick reviews: from cleansers to masks, stopping by beauty oils and eye creams [long post]

My skin is a combination type; it gets incredibly dry around my cheeks and relatively oily in my t-zone. I can usually get away with a little blotting during the day. I have some large(ish) pores and a tendency for blackheads, so cleansing is a big must for me. I don't have heavy under-eye bags or dark circles but my under-eye area is very dry. I try to stay away from any intense exfoliation, dermabrasion and peel treatments due to some bad experiences.

I'm past 35 years old now, but lines and crow's feet are not my primary concern. Not to say I don't have lines and crow's feet - it's just that my philosophy is to accept I'm getting older and just get on with life. I find that if I hydrate my face and eye area well, I look pretty decent for my age - and that's all I aim to look. I'm a bit fickle with regards to skincare and keep rotating between brands. These are my absolutely favourite products, the ones I keep buying over and over again.

    The cleansers and makeup removers:

Bioderma sensibio H2O micelle solution: this is my go-to cleanser when I need to quickly take make up off. Soft but effective cleansing water, removes all makeup leaving no residue. Cheap and cheerful, no wonder it's in everyone's best product lists. I keep a bottle on my fencing kit for removing makeup prior to exercise.

Emma Hardie moringa cleansing balm: a revelation. This smells divine, removes all makeup, feels moisturising and leaves the skin ultra soft. I love this cleanser but I like balmy cleansers that melt away the makeup and are used with a cloth. I started using it, combined with the cleansing cloths, after a facial with THE Emma Hardie and even my skin's rough texture is improved after regular use. I'm already on my 3rd pot.

RMK cleansing oil: as far as cleansing oils go, this is one of the best I ever tried. The new formulation smells very nice, a little bit minty. It takes away all eyes, lip and face makeup without the need to rub. I grab it when I need to take away very heavy makeup; I find it softer than a balm. Emulsifies easily, but I usually double cleanse with a gel afterwards.

NARS cleansing oil: I was heartbroken when I heard this was being discontinued and stocked up a few bottles. The oil texture is revolutionary, and can be used wet (in the shower) unlike most oils. It's a bit thicker than the RMK one, but highly effective and easy to remove. I hope someone comes up with something similar before my stash runs out. I sometimes use this to remove strong lipstick.

Elemental Herbology cool & clear: I use it in the shower, the perfect way to start the day. Very fresh and light with a lovely lavender scent. It washes away the night oils without stripping the skin. Also light enough for double cleansing after oils.

Lancôme bi-facil eye makeup remover: this bi-phasic formula really removes all my eye makeup without need for tugging. I will use other eye makeup removers, but eventually return to this one and every time I fly I stock up on it. It's probably the most re-purchased skincare/cosmetic item in my life.

    The moisturising section:

Ever since I started reading Beauty Huile my skincare routine changed completely. I am now officially obsessed with oils. I find they hydrate, soothe, nurture my skin in a way no cream has ever did. I use a heavier oil at night and a lighter one in the morning under a liquid hydrator. During summer my choice is Elemental Herbology moisture milk, for winter I stick to RMK skintuner ex moist (been using this for 5 years now).

Since I learned all about oils from the master I will simply link to her reviews. There's nothing I can add to them.

Decléor aromessence ylang ylang purifying serum: applied in the mornings

By Terry huile de rose firming-lift nutri-regenerating oil: applied in the mornings, just on the cheek and dry areas

Aesop damascan rose facial treatment: every other night

Sarah Chapman overnight facial: This one was not recommended by NK, but I "found" it as a generous sample in a SpaceNK event (same initials, not related). It really leaves the skin glowing and I alternate it with the Aesop Damascan Rose every other night. I should probably try a facial with Sarah C. to see if the results are anything like this lovely night oil ;-)

The special care (because I am getting old and I need something specifically for the eyes and lips):

Sarah Chapman eye recovery: I discovered it via Grace London when I was searching for a light but moisturising cream to apply to my under eye area in the morning. It's difficult to find the right balance between hydrating this area and not messing up the makeup. This one does it. It's a staple.

Sisley sisleÿa eye and lip contour cream: the complete splurge in my routine. I have naturally dry under eyes area, not improved by using and removing eye makeup daily. This little pot lasts nearly a whole year since I only apply it at night. I credit this the only reason why my eye area doesn't look 15 years older than the rest of my face (that's what it looked like 2 years ago before I started using it). I apply whatever leftover I may have on my finger to the lips.

By Terry baume de rose: perfect even if expensive. It really works for my lips, apply it evening and morning and my dry lips are maintained tip top condition without flaking. Worth every penny.

Honourable mentions (including masks and exfoliators):

Emma Hardie rosehip exfoliating seeds: bought it together with the cleanser, these are loose seeds to mix with the moringa cleansing balm and achieve the desired level of exfoliation. It takes time to find the right amount, the first time I used it my skin turned red! But now I'm good at judging the right amount and I use it once a week to renew the skin. Very nice for those like me who don't enjoy chemical exfoliation.

Chantecaille jasmine and lily healing mask: a marvellous, soothing mask that I apply on the follow up from exfoliation. Hydrates my skin and keeps it from flaring up or reacting. Can't ask for anything more.

Dermalogica daily microfoliant: a very light exfoliator, to be mixed with wet hands. I use it when I can't be bothered to do it properly with the Emma Hardie stuff. Can be used daily.

Emma Hardie rejuvenating night cream: it was the third Emma Hardie purchase; this is an enormous pot that lasts forever. I find it too rich to use at night (since I already use the oils) but it's perfect for the mornings :-D not as a moisturiser, but as I go jogging every morning this is the ideal protection from the cold and wind. I skip it in the very rare days when it's warm enough at 6 am.

Eve Lom cleanser and rescue mask: somehow I always end up returning to this combination. When I feel like a deeper at-home facial, I apply the cleanser (trying to follow the massage instructions), steam my face, extract any blackheads and then apply a generous layer of the rescue mask. It does the trick and saves me the money of going for regular extractions.

WOW maybe you're still reading after ALL this. If so, I hope I could provide some help or information or at least rule out some expensive tests. I'm copying all this text to my skincare page for future reference, and will update it when changing my routine:

Again, a huge thank you for reading this :-)

Dolce & Gabbana Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipstick new shade: 180 Fatale - review, swatches, makeover

Wow that's a long title! Dolce & Gabbana just released new shades for their passion duo lipsticks and what to I do? Well, not hard to guess give the title. I already wrote at length how much I like these lipsticks, so as soon as they called me from the counter to tell me about the launch, I booked an appointment. The new releases are mostly nudes and pinks but they also include two stunning bright shades: one red and one orange. Both are perfect for summer, but since I was going out for dinner I chose to use the red 180 Fatale for a look.

D&G Passion Duo in 180 Fatale
The formula remains the same, pigmented cream with a glossy core and still retains the rose scent (more subtle than their other lipstick ranges). Fatale is a very pretty strawberry red, without strong pink, blue or orange undertones. It fades to a persistent stain and you'll need a good makeup remover to erase all traces of red.

The makeup artist on the Harrods counter, Stella, gave me a quick look using the lipstick as the central focus. I really liked the outcome and loved staying in the air conditioning for that half hour (oh the heat, can't live with it, can't live without it!). I'm very happy at myself for being well behaved and leaving only with this lipstick even though I liked the bright orange so much.

Look details: creamy foundation (80) with a dusting of powder foundation (90); rosebud blush on the cheeks; glow bronzing powder to contour under cheekbones;  golds quad on the eyes: ivory applied all over lid and brought down to under-eye, matte brown to define the crease and light gold over lid; coffee eyeliner on the top lashline and 2 layers of secret eyes mascara.

Kevyn Aucoin the loose shimmer shadow - all shades, swatches, review, photos

The subtitle of this post should be "pigments gone portable" because that's what these really are :-) Loose eyeshadows in a roller-ball packaging that you can take anywhere and apply without brushes, long-lasting and perfect for any gym/travel kit. I was browsing the displays in SpaceNK when I saw this smaller one with Kevyn Aucoin's new collection and I stopped on my tracks.

There's six different shades: topaz, rose quartz, citrine, lapis, amethyst, jade and a felt tip liquid liner: black, which I'm not sure if it's new or just repromoted with this collection. The collection look appears to be a combination of the pale green (jade) on the lid, bright yellow (citrine) as brown highlighter and lilac (amethyst) in the lower lashline. Then a cat-eye with the black liquid liner. It's stunning!

Staring at the roller-ball applicator I couldn't quite get to grips as to how they would apply. In my experience loose eyeshadow is associated with mega fallout, using myriads of brushes to apply and just generally a hassle. But honestly, this totally works!! The swatches below were all done with a couple of swipes and you can see how even the result is.

Kevyn Aucoin The loose Shimmer Shadow swatches (picture taken with mobile phone)
The texture is slightly creamy and so it adheres well to the roller-ball and the skin. It transfers from the applicator to the skin very smoothly and with hardly any fallout. They may require a little bit of touch-up but it's very minor and if you take care to apply with the bottle slightly tilted there's no patchiness. They have extraordinary lasting power (I always use a primer), can be applied straight to the eyelid and blended with the finger, you don't even need brushes.

I had a gift card to use so I took the plunge with Rose Quartz; it's a very simple colour that I can use it on a daily basis. Very likely I already have similar shades, but they're all in palettes and this one is great for makeup on-the-go. I still feel tempted by Citrine - it's such a beautiful yellow, but the rest of the colours are quite standard and I skipped them quite easily. Brownie point for me! A close up of rose quartz applied all over the eyelid. I like it that this is grow-up shimmer, not glitter.

Rose Quartz all over lid, applied with roller-ball and blended with fingers
I tried to line the eyes with the Jemma Kid i-glamour define eyeliner in copper (free with September's Elle UK) but I found it very hard and after a bit of tugging on my lid I gave up; not a big fan of hard eyeliners.

Oh, and before I forget this is what the applicator looks like. Very neat and compact.

So what do you think? Will you try any of them?

Gifts with purchase and news from SUQQU, RMK, and Paul & Joe

Today I decided to brave Oxford Street to do some window shopping and was pleasantly surprised at how calm it was. Not sure if it was due to the torrential rain earlier but there was hardly anyone around. Just as with my commute, it seems that the millions of visitors are not really having much impact in daily life :-) So I took my time and visited my favourite makeup counters.

SUQQU has been growing steadily in the past few years and Selfridges finally moved the counter to main beauty hall, right next to the Kanebo Sensai counter. It looks very stylish and airy and I'm glad they have the recognition the brand deserves. They have a really nice GWP now, available for purchases over £150 and it includes two towels; one for the face (100% cotton) and one for the body (100% polyester) and small bottles of essential oils: grapefruit and lavender. The towels are both relatively big and soft and the oils smell divine.

The only news I didn't enjoy much was that the loyalty card scheme changed and now you can only accrue stamps (1 per £65 spent) with skincare and base makeup purchases, the point makeup was removed from the loyalty card. Not very nice. I hardly use SUQQU skincare and it will now take me a very long time to get enough stamps for the musculate massage cream :-(

On happier news, the RMK counter is being renewed. The area next to the food hall is being refurbished and they will have a new counter in this area. The old counter is still there until the move, but I can't wait to see the new Deep Iridescence collection début in a new counter. RMK usually has very generous (and useful) GWPs so I imagine this double event will be fantastic. Their Summer GWP is really nice, a lovely cooler bag with 2 ice packs - perfect to take lunch to work. This is free with any two purchases.

The other newcomer to the refurbished beauty hall in Selfridges will be Paul & Joe! The lovely assistant at the Fenwick Bond St counter said it is going to open end August/ early September. On another note she also said that the Alice in Wonderland set went on eBay for £180 which is a bit disturbing, really, £180!?!?!

Anyway, they released the new Love Birds face colours, which are even prettier in real life. The lipsticks will follow in a couple of weeks. And they have two gorgeous makeup bags as GWP, both with the stork print. I already have a huge collection of Paul & Joe bags, one of these days I should blog about that, but these are a very welcome addition! Not sure what's the minimum purchase, but usually P & J's is relatively low.

Hope you like the news, I'm very happy these brands are growing and becoming more widely known - they have great products and amazing customer service.

NARS Eyeliner Stylo - a quick review and swatches of all the new shades

The new NARS eyeliner stylos arrived! You can see the excitement in the blogosphere, and after trying them on my last trip to SpaceNK I feel I also need to jump on this bandwagon. They are really amazing. Personally I love felt-tip eyeliners, I find them easier to apply and control the thickness of the line.

I wasn't too happy with the previous incarnation of the NARS stylos, I found it difficult to get a smooth line without patches. There's no such problems on this generation, the colours are rich and deep; the tip dispenses enough liquid to achieve a line in one swipe and they dry reasonably fast. They are perfect. I did a quick cat eye with them at the shop and it was impressive how easy it was to use them.

    NARS eyeliner stylos
As you can see in the swatches, Nuku Hiva is the odd one. The colour isn't as deep as the others and it looks like it bleeds slightly. I'm not sure if I tried a bad batch or if there's something wrong with this shade - if you've tried it I'd love to hear your thoughts. I was also disappointed because from the initial press release I thought it was going to be a reddish brown and it's clearly not. Atlantic is a perfect navy blue.

Koala is grey and Carpates is dark black. They are not matte, flat colours, there's a certain sheen to them. In the swatch above I applied two layers of each and you can see how Koala darkened, transforming into an almost soft black. It's great for versatility and what I wanted the London eyeliner pencil to be. I did another swatch of them side by side, with just one layer so you can see the differences.

NARS eyeliner stylo Carpates vs. Koala
I haven't bought one yet, I have a couple of liquid eyeliners I want to finish before they dry out. No need to hurry since these are not limited edition but I keep thinking of how much I like Atlantic and Koala, so if this carries on for another week I might use the rest of my gift card to get them.

Have you tried them? Do you love them?
